Sweet New York

It was quite a week...I was concerned that it might be bittersweet, but it was far sweeter than bitter. This little summary does not really capture what a wonderful week it was, but it will have to do!

The Tony's were fantastic, quite an experience - even in the third balcony all were dressed in tuxes and gowns!

Monday we took the train up to Connecticut to visit some of my previous coworkers and were treated to a wonderful lunch...later that day we stopped by my acting group and even participated (mom too!) in part of the class...wrapping up the day with a visit to Elaine's, where the manager Gianni and waiters Ricki and Freddie had a bouquet of roses and a great table for us to share with my great friend Karyn.

Even some of our "Thursday night" friends Peter and Chet stopped in as well. I had the tomato and onion salad and seafood risotto that I had dreamed of while on the feeding tube. Elaine herself was happy to see us and had a great reply when I commented that my hair was a little feathery still - "It looks great. Mia Farrow made millions with that hair-do."

Tuesday started out with a lovely pedicure at Bliss Spa, compliments of Dave, and most of the remainder of the day was spent resting after such a busy Monday. We did manage to get to the Top of the Rock, Rockefeller Center, where the views of Manhattan are extraordinary. . That night we met my friend Glorisel, a PwC coworker, at Buddha Bar, a hip restaurant/club in the Meatpacking District followed by champagne at Apartment, another trendy place that is like an apartment inside - we sat on the bed!

I saw Dr. Young at Sloane Kettering Wednesday morning, who was amazed by my year-long adventure since I left them. After bloodwork and a thorough visit, he planned to take my case to the transplant team the next day to get a group consensus on what they would recommend as the next step. He did have a couple of options that are now possibilities given my remission and current state. I should hear back from their team in the next couple of weeks. After lunch in Midtown and more rest, mom and I went to the musical Drowsy Chaperone that night and laughed over and over. We stopped by a bar at one of the hotels we used to stay at, to see an old friend Robert, the bartender, who lives in the neighbourhood I did.

Thursday we stayed around midtown, shopping, resting and having lunch at Nobu 57, an delicious version of the Tribeca restaurant we'd been to several times before.
My friend Karyn, a native New Yorker, had taken off Friday to drive us to the Hamptons, but ended up having to work in Seattle on Thursday, flying back that morning on the red-eye, so I decided to skip the long drive to the Hamptons and enjoy lunch and shopping with her in the City instead. Like several of my New York friends, mom and I had met her at Elaine's even before I moved there, so we ended up there that night again! It was great to be back there, among familiar faces, as though the past year had never happened. Elaine came by the table with a smile to say "I knew I'd see you again!". My friend Chet also stopped by and by the end of the night, as always, we had met more friends. I call Elaine's my "portal to the world" for all the connections and friends I'd met there.

While at the Tony's we witnessed one musical winning 8 awards, and I went online the next day, managing to get tickets! We were able to see Spring Awakening, an incredibly genius musical.

Saturday night we had a wonderful dinner with Jaime, another friend I worked with at PwC, and her husband Paul in trendy Soho. It was a great finish to a nearly perfect week.

A new chapter of New York has started for me from the trip. I feel some closure about having left a tremendous life there so suddenly last summer, and know that I will be back soon to visit so many amazing friends. Whenever I need some "juice" I know I can hop on a direct flight to JFK and crash on an Aerobed at many of my friends' apartments, and end up at Elaine's.
